Vehicle Registration Cancellation in Florida – Temporary (Temp) Tag

If you obtained a temporary Florida tag in order to transport you vehicle, these tags typically expire in 11 to 30 days depending on the type you applied for. These cannot be “renewed” in the way that full registrations are renewed on a yearly or bi-yearly basis. If you have a temporary tag and want to obtain a full registration, you must do so in person at a local tax collector’s office. Temporary tags used for:
• Driving a vehicle purchased from out-of-state to register in Florida. Plate is valid for a maximum of 30 days from the date issued
• Driving a vehicle purchased within the state of Florida to a port to ship out of the country. Plate is valid for a maximum of 10 days from the date issued
• Vehicles purchased at a dealership and issued an electronic temporary registration (ETR) with temporary plate. Plate is valid for a maximum of 30 days from the date issued
• Individuals attempting to sale a vehicle they own and have transferred its existing plate to another vehicle. Plate is valid for a maximum of 30 days from the date issued

The registered owner will need to contact their local tax collector’s office to request a permanent plate be issued to their vehicle.
